Insurance Coverage Alone For Smoking-Cessation Drugs
Does Not Increase Quit Rates, New Study Finds, Healthaffairs.org:"Expanding health insurance coverage to include nicotine patches, nicotine gum, and other medications for quitting smoking failed to increase rates of smoking cessation, according to a study published today in the journal Health Affairs.
The study indicates that insurance coverage for smoking-cessation drugs on its own is not enough to change smokers' habits, even though these drugs have proved effective in clinical trials. Other types of support, such as behavioral therapy, may be needed in conjunction with medication use to increase smoking-cessation rates, the study authors suggested.
"This study tells us that drug coverage is only part of the answer," said lead study author Raymond G. Boyle, a researcher with the HealthPartners Research Foundation in Minneapolis. "Simply providing insurance coverage is not sufficient to increase quit rates."

Background Papers on the Use of Nicotine and Other Smoking Cessation Medications in Pregnant and Adolescent Smokers, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation:"This grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) supported researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine to prepare a background paper on the risks and benefits of using nicotine replacement therapies and other smoking- cessation aids approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pregnant smokers. There is growing evidence that these smoking cessation aids can double the usual smoking quit rates achieved through self-help programs. This project consisted of a literature review and critical analysis of the potential risks and benefits of using FDA-approved pharmacological quitting aids, including reviews of published and pre-publication research reports and FDA materials. The paper, entitled Risks and Benefits of Nicotine and Other Medications to Aid Smoking Cessation in Pregnancy, focused on smoking cessation during pregnancy and lactation."
