Chlorpromazine, (Thorazine), Say No To Psychiatry:"Thorazine has been called a "chemical lobotomy" because of the similar effects it creates. Briefly, a lobotomy destroys partially or completely all functioning of the frontal lobes. The frontal lobes are unique to human beings and are the seat of the higher functions such as love, concern for others, empathy, self-insight, creativity, initiative, autonomy, rationality, abstract reasoning, judgment, future planning, foresight, will-power, determination and concentration. Without the frontal lobes it is impossible to be "human" in the fullest sense of the word; they are required for a civilized, effective, mature life. Without this "human" aspect a person is incapable of living a rewarding, happy and responsible life. While the neuroleptics are toxic to most brain functions, disrupting nearly all of them, they have an especially well-documented impact on the dopamine neurotransmitter system. As any psychiatric textbook explains, dopamine neurotransmitters provide the major nerve pathways from the deeper brain to the frontal lobes and limbic system - the very same area attacked by surgical lobotomy. The disruption in the functioning of the frontal lobes results in the same effect - a greatly reduced person with dementia and reduction of awareness of self and the environment. They become "vegetables" - a body with very little mind or personality left."

Chlorpromazine, (Thorazine), HealthSquare:"You should use Thorazine cautiously if you have ever had: asthma; a brain tumor; breast cancer; intestinal blockage; emphysema; the eye condition known as glaucoma; heart, kidney, or liver disease; respiratory infections; seizures; or an abnormal bone marrow or blood condition; or if you are exposed to pesticides or extreme heat. Be aware that Thorazine can mask symptoms of brain tumor, intestinal blockage, and the neurological condition called Reye's syndrome. Stomach inflammation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and tremors may result if you suddenly stop taking Thorazine. Follow your doctor's instructions closely when discontinuing Thorazine. Thorazine can suppress the cough reflex; you may have trouble vomiting. This drug may impair your ability to drive a car or operate potentially dangerous machinery. Do not participate in any activities that require full alertness if you are unsure about your ability. This drug can increase your sensitivity to light. Avoid being out in the sun too long."

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, notify your doctor. Pregnant women should use Thorazine only if clearly needed. Thorazine appears in breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you not to breastfeed until your treatment is finished."

Chlorpromazine, (Thorazine), Public Television:"In 1952, Henri Laborit, a surgeon in Paris, was looking for a way to reduce surgical shock in his patients. Much of the shock came from the anaesthesia, and if he could find a way to use less, his patients could recover quicker. He knew that shock was the result of certain brain chemicals and looked for a chemical that might counteract these. He tried antihistamines, usually used to fight allergies. He noticed when he gave a strong dose to his patients, their mental state changed. They didn't seem anxious about their upcoming surgery, in fact, they were rather indifferent. Laborit was able to operate using much less anaesthetic. He was so struck by the effect on his patients, especially with a drug called chlorpromazine (trade name Thorazine) he thought the drug must have some use in psychiatry. But at that time, "no one in his right mind in psychiatry was working with drugs. You used shock or various psychotherapies," said Canadian psychiatrist Heinz Lehmann. Laborit kept pressing his point, however. A fellow surgeon passed the word to his brother-in-law, the psychiatrist Pierre Deniker. Deniker's interest was piqued and he ordered some chlorpromazine to try on his most agitated, uncontrollable patients."

Chlorpromazine, (Thorazine), Red Oak Psychiatry Associates, P.A.:"Contraindications, Warnings and Precautions: Contraindicated in patients in comatose states or in the presence of large amounts of central nervous system depressants. The extrapyramidal symptoms that can occur secondary to Thorazine may be confused with the signs of an undiagnosed primary disease responsible for the vomiting such as Reye’s Syndrome or other encephalopathy. Thorazine and other potential hepatotoxins should be avoided in children and adolescents whose signs and symptoms suggest Reye’s Syndrome. The potentially fatal symptom complex of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) has been reported in association with this class of drugs. Signs of NMS include muscle rigidity, altered mental status, high fever, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and cardiac dysrhythmia. Tardive Dyskinisia (TD) is a potentially irreversible, involuntary movement that may develop. The highest prevalence of TD is in the elderly, particularly women. Safety for use during pregnancy has not been established. Use cautiously in persons with cardiovascular, liver or renal disease as well as persons with chronic respiratory disorders. Thorazine can suppress the cough reflex; therefore, aspiration of vomitus possible."
