Rabepraxole description: RxList: "The active ingredient in ACIPHEXTM Delayed-Release Tablets is rabeprazole sodium, a substituted benzimidazole that inhibits gastric acid secretion. Rabeprazole sodium is known chemically as 2-[[[4-(3-methoxypropoxy)-3-methyl-2-pyridinyl]-methyl]sulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole sodium salt. It has an empirical formula of C18H20N3NaO3S and a molecular weight of 381.43. Rabeprazole sodium is a white to slightly yellowish-white solid. It is very soluble in water and methanol, freely soluble in ethanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate and insoluble in ether and n-hexane. The stability of rabeprazole sodium is a function of pH; it is rapidly degraded in acid media, and is more stable under alkaline conditions.
ACIPHEXTM is available for oral administration as delayed-release, enteric-coated tablets containing 20 mg of rabeprazole sodium. Inactive ingredients are mannitol, hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium oxide, low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, ethylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate, diacetylated monoglycerides, talc, titanium dioxide, carnauba wax, and ferric oxide (yellow) as a coloring agent"

Rabeprazole for Reflux Disease and Duodenal Ulcers: American Family Physician: "A new proton pump inhibitor, rabeprazole sodium (Aciphex), has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for healing of erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), maintenance of healed erosive GERD and healing of duodenal ulcers. It has also been approved for the treatment of pathologic hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Like other proton pump inhibitors, rabeprazole inhibits the action of the proton acid pump in the acid-secreting cells of the stomach lining. It is available in 20-mg, enteric-coated tablets to be taken once daily for most indications.
In clinical trials, rabeprazole significantly decreased intragastric acidity for each of four meal-related intervals and the 24-hour time period overall. The antisecretory effect began within one hour after oral administration. Headache was the most common side effect. Rabeprazole is contraindicated in patients with known sensitivity to rabeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles or any component of the formulation"

Medical, surgical nursing update; Rabeprazole (Acephix): Hartcourt health: "Mechanism of Action
Proton inhibitor drugs work through specific inhibition of the H+, K+-ATPase enzyme system. This enzyme system is regarded as the acid (proton) pump in the parietal cells. Inhibition of this enzyme system results in reduction of the volume of gastric hydrochloric acid secretion. Therefore, proton inhibitor drugs block the final step in acid secretion. (Proton inhibitor drugs are discussed on pages 1094 and 1118 of the text.)
Rabeprazole has similar efficacy to omeprazole (Prilosec), which was one of the first proton pump inhibitors, and greater efficacy than H2 antagonists (e.g., ranitidine [Pepcid]) with regard to ulcer healing and GERD symptoms.
Side Effects
Adverse side effects of rabeprazole are similar to other proton pump inhibitors and include malaise, nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and skin eruptions"

Rabeprazole As Effective As Omeprazole In Preventing Relapse Of Recurrent Erosive GERD: Doc guide: "Rabeprazole (Pariet®) 10 mg is as effective as omeprazole 20 mg in preventing relapse of healed erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) according to a recent study published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences, heralding cost-saving potential for the NHS.1 Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) prescriptions currently cost the National Health Service (NHS) in excess of 400 million pounds each year and GERD maintenance prescriptions account for over 50 percent of these.2 "

Symptom relief using Rabepraxole (Acephix): jnj.com: "In data presented here at the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) meeting, most patients with erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) who were taking ACIPHEX® (rabeprazole sodium) once daily reported significant symptom relief for both daytime and nighttime heartburn after the first day of treatment.*
Results of the eight-week, open-label, multicenter trial were presented in an abstract on behalf of participating sites by Malcolm Robinson, M.D., chairman of the study steering committee and founder and a medical director of the Oklahoma Foundation for Digestive Research at the University of Oklahoma. The trial involved more than 2,500 patients with endoscopically confirmed erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease. According to the abstract, patients were diagnosed and treated by 420 community-based gastroenterologists.
The study assessed the change in severity of erosive GERD symptoms, such as heartburn and regurgitation, during the first seven days of therapy and again at week four. Patients' symptom severity was rated on a four-point scale that ranged from zero (indicating no symptoms) to three (severe symptoms). Satisfactory symptom relief was defined as a zero or one rating (no symptoms or mild symptoms) on the scale.
Based on data from a preliminary analysis, approximately 80 percent of patients with moderate to severe symptoms taking ACIPHEX® reported satisfactory symptom relief on day one for both daytime and nighttime heartburn. By day seven, 91.2 percent of patients reported satisfactory symptom relief for daytime heartburn, and 91.7 percent reported satisfactory symptom relief for nighttime heartburn."

Indications for use and general drug information for Rabeprazole: Aciphex Consumer info: "Aciphex is used for:
short-term (4-8 weeks) healing of a gradual breakdown (erosion) or sore (ulceration) in the esophagus which may be caused by the backward flow of gastric acid from the stomach into the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD);
maintenance of healing of erosive or ulcerative GERD;
short-term (up to 4 weeks) healing of an ulcer in the duodenum;
medical conditions that result in the body secreting too much acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
General Information about Aciphex:
Aciphex does not work for everyone. Improvement in your symptoms does not prevent you from having other stomach-related medical conditions.
What should I tell my doctor or health care provider?
Because Aciphex lowers the level of acid in your stomach, certain other medications can interact with Aciphex. Review all medications that you are taking with your health care provider, including those that you take without a prescription.
Tell your health care provider if you are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
What are some possible side effects of Aciphex? (This is NOT a complete list of side effects reported with Aciphex. Your health care provider can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects.)
Aciphex is generally well tolerated. The most common side effect is headache."

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."
