Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. 90% protein bound and metabolized in the liver. Half-life is 2-4 hours. Action Inhibits sodium reabsorbtion in proximal tubule and loop of Henle. Toxicity Fluid and electrolyte imbalances are common. Ototoxicity in hepatic disease. Should not be used at all in patients with hepatic dysfunction. May cause GI bleeding (especially when given with corticosteroids), hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hyperuricemia, hypocalcemia, vestibular and auditory dysfunction, and thrombophlebitis.
