Manufacturer to Change Levaquin Unit-Dose Packaging:"In March 1997, USP received the first of 23 reports on LevaquinŽ (levofloxacin, by Ortho-McNeil) regarding the poor readability of the product's unit-dose labels. Health care practitioners concerned about medication errors reported having difficulty distinguishing between the 250-mg and 500-mg Levaquin silver-colored unit-dose foil packets. The strength on each foil packet is printed in black on a shaded background. The label can be read only if the foil packet is held at just the right angle relative to lighting. In response to these practitioners' concerns, the company informed USP in January 1998, that it was in the process of redesigning the Levaquin foil packaging for easier readability. This is an example of how practitioners, who report their concerns, have affected drug products to improve their packaging and labeling."
