Clotrimazole (Lotrimin), Nurses's PDR Resource Center:"Action/Kinetics: Depending on concentration, may be fungistatic or fungicidal. Acts by inhibiting the biosynthesis of sterols, resulting in damage to the cell wall and subsequent loss of essential intracellular elements due to altered permeability. May also inhibit oxidative and peroxidative enzyme activity and inhibit the biosynthesis of triglycerides and phospholipids by fungi. When used for Candida albicans the drug inhibits transformation of blastophores into the invasive mycelial form. Poorly absorbed from the GI tract and metabolized in the liver to inactive compounds that are excreted through the feces. Duration: up to 3 hr. Uses: Broad-spectrum antifungal effective against Malassezia furfur, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, C. albicans. Oral troche: Oropharyngeal candidiasis. Reduce incidence of oropharyngeal candidiasis in clients who are immunocompromised due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or steroid therapy used for leukemia, solid tumors, or kidney transplant. Topical OTC products: Topically to treat tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis. Topical prescription products: Same as OTC plus candidiasis and tinea versicolor. Vaginal products: Vulvovaginal candidiasis."

Clotrimazole (Lotrimin), PDR.net:"Keep all forms of this medicine away from your eyes. Before applying the skin preparations, be sure to wash your hands. Massage the medication gently into the affected area and the surrounding skin. If you are taking Mycelex troches, place the lozenge in your mouth and let it dissolve slowly for 15 to 30 minutes. Do not chew the lozenge or swallow it whole. If you are using a vaginal cream or tablet, use the following administration technique: Load the applicator to the fill line with cream, or unwrap a tablet, wet it with warm water, and place it in the applicator as shown in the instructions you receive with the product. Lie on your back with your knees drawn up. Gently insert the applicator high into the vagina and push the plunger. Withdraw the applicator and discard it if disposable, or wash with soap and water. To keep the vaginal medication from getting on your clothing, wear a sanitary napkin. Do not use a tampon because it will absorb the medicine. Wear underwear or pantyhose with a cotton crotch--avoid synthetic fabrics such as nylon or rayon. Do not douche unless your doctor tells you to do so."

Might not this potion hurt your ear – or worse – cause you a weird systemic reaction equal to a curse in Deuteronomy? What is the connection, anyhow, between a red, itchy foot and an ear that hurts like a bad toothache? These are questions I personally had to consider as I anxiously stood in the aisle of my drug store reading the variously colored boxes of Lotrimin cream formulas. I was actually looking for the "liquid version" of Lotrimin that my doctor – an ENT specialist at NYU – told me to buy and apply to my poor left ear twice a day, two drops at a time. Not being able to make the connection between the athlete’s foot medication and my earache, I seriously questioned whether he could have possibly made a terrible mistake."

In healthy persons, "friendly" bacteria and the immune system prevent the fungus from causing infection. However, if you have a damaged or weakened immune system, it's easier for Candida to grow and cause disease. Certain drugs can alter the natural organisms in the vagina, which can then promote the growth of Candida. These include the extended use of antibiotics, steroids and oral contraceptives (birth control) with a high estrogen content. Other factors that may cause candidiasis include: diabetes, pregnancy, using antihistamines (drugs commonly used to prevent allergies and rash) and iron, folate, vitamin B12 or zinc deficiency. Factors that may weaken the immune system—from cancer chemotherapy to stress and depression—can also cause candidiasis. Tight fitting pants and reactions to chemical ingredients found in soaps and detergents can lead to vaginal candidiasis as well."
