Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), The Access Project:"Drug description: Amphotericin B is used to treat many fungal infections including histoplasmosis and Cryptococcus. Histoplasmosis spreads through the blood stream and may affect multiple organs and produce a wide variety of symptoms. The most common symptoms are fever, swollen glands, weight loss, respiratory problems, weakness, lethargy, and enlargement of the liver and spleen. Cryptococcus usually infects the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. If you are starting amphotericin B and are taking ddC, you should discontinue ddC until you are stable on amphotericin B. You should not take other drugs that can affect the kidneys, such as foscarnet, at the same time as amphotericin B. A less toxic form of amphotericin B, called lipid amphotericin B, is being studied. There is also a liquid form of the drug that can be taken orally for treating thrush that is resistant to other antifungal
drugs."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), Neonatology on the Web:"Fevers, vomiting, and hypokalemia (causing muscle and joint pains and weakness, and arrhythmias) may occur. Mild renal tubular acidosis and hypomagnesemia may occur. Serious renal toxicity occurs frequently. Renal damage results from vasoconstriction, impaired acid excretion, and direct tubular damage with nephrocalcinosis. Bone marrow suppression to some extent almost always occurs. Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, jaundice and hepatoxicity are rarely seen. Monitor K, Mg, BUN, creatinine, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, GOT daily until dose stable, then q week with CBC. In older children, side effects are decreased with concurrent use of aspirin, antihistamines, and IV hydrocortisone."

Dose: Highly individualized. Test dose with 1-5mg infusions. If test dose is tolerated, dose at 0.4-0.6mg/kg/day IV slowly over 24 hours. Average daily dose is 50-70mg/day. Duration of therapy depends on the infection. Prehydrate, may require potassium and magnesium. Do not use IV filters with any formulation of amphotericin."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), Malahyde Information Systems:"PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: FUNGIZONE is a polyene antifungal antibiotic obtained from Streptomyces nodosus.. It is effective in vitro against a wide range of yeasts and yeast-like fungi, including Candida albicans. The antifungal activity of FUNGIZONE is, at least in part, dependent on its binding to a sterol moiety, primarily ergosterol, present in the membrane of sensitive fungi. This results in an increase in the permeability of the membrane which allows leakage of the intra-cellular components. Pharmacokinetic: absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is negligible."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), Yahoo! Inc.:"How to use and store this medicine. Intravenous (IV) Infusion: Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. An IV infusion is medicine that is put directly into your body through one of your veins. This medicine should be given by a person trained to give an IV, such as a nurse. Sometimes you, a family member, or friend can be taught to give your medicine. If you have your treatments at home, you should be given a special container for the used needles. Keep it where children or pets cannot reach it. Check the bag to make sure there are no leaks. Also make sure the solution is clear. If you see particles in the solution, You should not use it. Store in a refrigerator. Do not freeze. Take it out of the refrigerator an hour before the time for your next dose and allow it to warm to room temperature in a clean, dry place."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), MEDLINEplus:"In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For amphotericin B, the following should be considered: Allergies: Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to amphotericin B. Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes. Pregnancy: Amphotericin B has not been reported to cause birth defects or other problems in humans. Breast-feeding: Amphotericin B has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies. Children: Although there is no specific information comparing use of amphotericin B in children with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to cause different side effects or problems in children than it does in adults. Older adults: Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people. Therefore, it may not be known whether
they work exactly the same way they do in younger adults or if they cause different side effects or problems in older people. There is no specific information comparing use of amphotericin B in the elderly with use in other age groups."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), AIDSMeds.com:"It is important to treat mild-to-moderate cryptococcal meningitis aggressively. For the first two weeks of treatment, the drug amphotericin B (Fungizone®) is given every day through an IV line, along with a second drug taken by mouth: flucytosine (Ancobon®). Amphotericin B can cause side effects, some of them serious. Side effects include nausea, fever, chills, muscle pain, low potassium levels, damage to the bone marrow and its ability to produce red blood cells and white blood cells, and kidney damage. Tip: Take a regular dose of acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol®), ibuprofen (e.g., Advil®), naproxen (e.g., Aleve®), or diphenhydramine (e.g., Benadryl®) approximately half an hour before receiving amphotericin B – this can help prevent/reduce some side effects during and after receiving the infusion."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), RxList:"FUNGIZONE Intravenous (Amphotericin B for Injection USP) should be administered primarily to patients with progressive, potentially life-threatening fungal infections. This potent drug should not be used to treat noninvasive fungal infections, such as oral thrush, vaginal candidiasis and esophageal candidiasis in patients with normal neutrophil counts. FUNGIZONE Intravenous is specifically intended to treat potentially lifethreatening fungal infections: aspergillosis, cryptococcosis (torulosis), North American blastomycosis, systemic candidiasis, coccidioido-mycosis, histoplasmosis, zygomycosis including mucormycosis due to susceptible species of the genera Absidia, Mucor and Rhizopus, and infections due to related susceptible species of Conidiobolusand and Basidiobolus, and sporotrichosis. Amphotericin B may be useful in the treatment of American mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, but it is not the drug of choice as primary therapy."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), Nurses's PDR Resource Center:"Action/Kinetics: This antibiotic is produced by Streptomyces nodosus; it is fungistatic or fungicidal depending on the concentration of the drug in body fluids and the susceptibility of the fungus. Amphotericin B binds to specific chemical structures--sterols--of the fungal cellular membrane, increasing cellular permeability and promoting loss of potassium and other substances. Liposomal encapsulation or incorporation in a lipid complex can significantly affect the functional properties of the drug compared with those of the unencapsulated or non-lipid-associated drug. The liposomal amphotericin B product causes less nephrotoxicity. Amphotericin B is used either IV or topically. It is highly bound to serum protein (90%) Peak plasma levels: 0.5-2 mcg/mL. t1/2, initial: 24 hr; second phase: 15 days. Slowly excreted by kidneys. The kinetics of the drug differ in adults and children and are also dependent on the product used."

Amphotericin B, (Fungizone), WholeHealthMD.com:"Drug Interactions: Consult your doctor for specific advice if you are taking corticosteroids, corticotropin, digitalis drugs, potassium-sparing diuretics, bone marrow depressants, nephrotoxic medications, or other topical prescription or over-the-counter medications. Also consult your doctor if you are undergoing radiation therapy. Food Interactions: No known food interactions. Disease Interactions: Caution is advised when taking amphotericin B. Consult your doctor if you have any other medical problem, especially kidney disease."

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."
